TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

A tankless water heater heats water directly as it passes through its internal piping; it does not rely on a 20-80 gallon water storage tank like traditional models and is able to eliminate standby heat losses associated with these less energy efficient models. With a tankless model there is absolutely no threat of diminishing your reserve of hot water to the point where you run out, as there is with traditional storage models. Because tankless heaters heat and deliver hot water almost instantaneously, there is significantly less lag time between when you turn on your faucet and when hot water is delivered.

Many tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. Storage heaters by contrast, typically last only about 10–15 years. In order to extend the life of your tankless water heater and keep it running optimally, manufacturers suggest performing certain maintenance steps every six months to two years.

ENERGY STAR qualified gas tankless water heaters provide hot water on demand, plus a whole lot more. Consider a qualified tankless water heater for your home and enjoy these benefits:

Save energy and money:  You don't use hot water 24-hours a day.

Continuous hot water:  Tankless water heaters provide a continuous flow of hot water.

Space-saving design:  A qualified tankless model saves you an extra closet's worth of space compared to a tank-type water heater.

Fewer worries:  Tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of 20 years.

One of the best ways to reduce energy costs in your home is to replace your existing water heater with a tankless  water heater. Replacing your tank type water heater with an energy efficient tankless water heater will be an easy transition.  However, one of the major differences between the two is that the tank type heats a large amount of water at a time and the tankless unit quickly heats the water as you use it.

There are several appliances in the house that can be replaced to reduce energy costs. Heating and cooling are two of the major utilities that can be reduced with energy efficient units. The other major appliance that runs up the bill on energy in the home is the cost of the water heater.

Tempra and Tempra Plus tankless water heaters

Tempra Plus 24 Tankless Water Heater

We replaced an 80 Gallon Tank Type Electric water heater with this Tempra 24 PLUS model tankless electric water heater.

We also installed a WHOLE HOUSE water filtration and conditioning system to extend the life of the water heater and reduce maintenance requirements.

Tankless water heaters are the latest innovation for domestic hot water generation. The principle is simple; make water hot when you need it, on demand. The demand occurs when someone opens the hot water faucet on a plumbing fixture and expects to feel hot water coming out of the faucet. As the water flows through the tankless heater, it is heated and the user gets exactly what was asked for, namely, hot water. No storage of hot water, no waiting for hot water to run through the piping to the faucet and no waste of water and energy. Sounds like a tankless water heater is the best thing to ever happen doesnt it?

Tankless Advantages

Long term energy savings: Although a tankless water heater might cost more initially it may result in both energy and cost savings in the long term. As water is heated only when it is needed, there is no storage of hot water. With a tank, water is kept warm all day even if it never gets used and heat loss through the tank walls will result in a continual energy drain. Even in homes or buildings with a high demand for hot water, a tankless water heater may provide some level of savings. In a typical home these savings are quite substantial. If instant hot water at the taps at limited hours is a priority, a recirculation system similar to those in the tank-type systems can be accommodated by using an aquastat and timer in order to decrease the added heat loss from the recirculation system. It has to be said though that if the storage tank is highly-insulated—a few tanks are available with excellent levels such as 100 mm or more polyurethane foam—the savings become minimal. For one consumer-grade electric storage water heater, the surface temperature was less than 1 °C higher than the air temperature.

Unlimited hot water: As water is heated while passing through the system an unlimited supply of hot water is available with a tankless water heater. Although flow rate will determine the amount of hot water that can be generated at one time it can be generated indefinitely. However, this can also be a disadvantage as running out of hot water self-limits use while a tankless heater has no such limit.

Less physical space: Most tankless water heaters can be mounted on a wall or even internally in a building's structure. This means less physical space has to be dedicated to heating water. Even systems that can't be mounted on walls take up less space than a tank-type water heater.

Reduced risk of water damage: No stored water means there is no risk of water damage from a tank failure or rupture, although the risk of water damage from a pipe or fitting failure remains. Improper piping in either the hot or cold water lines to the tankless water heater can result in water damage though.

Temperature compensation: A temperature compensating valve tends to eliminate the issue where the temperature and pressure from tankless heaters decrease during continuous use. Most new generation tankless water heaters stabilize water pressure and temperature by a bypass valve and a mixing valve which is incorporated in the unit. Modern Tankless are not inversely proportional, because they will regulate the amount of water that is created and discharged, therefore stabilizing water temperature by utilizing a flow control valve. Flow speed is not the issue, but change in temperature is the important issue to address. The wider the temperature rise, the less flow you receive from the unit. The smaller the temperature rise, the more flow you receive. The flow control valve in conjunction with thermistors, maintains a stable temperature throughout the use of the unit.

Safety: Tankless Water Heaters can precisely control the temperature of the treated water, which means dangerous temperature levels and spikes are no longer a problem.

Can Tankless Water Heating Save Me Money?

There are many new ways to reduce the cost of energy in your home including replacing your old appliances with energy efficient ones that use less energy to operate. Though these appliances come with an initial cost to install they were built using new technology that enables the appliance to run on far less energy and this reduces the pollution of energy emissions and the cost for running them.

The water heater provides the water not only for your hot showers and your sink, but it also is responsible for heating the water that goes into your laundry machine and your dishwasher. The laundry machine and the dishwasher can be made to be energy efficient but the savings will double if you also replace your tank type water heater with an energy efficient tankless water heater.

If you tend to take a shower while the dishwasher is running in the morning or while you are doing a load of laundry, you do not have to worry about running out of hot water. The hot water is heated as it runs through the heater because it does not have a tank. The water heater will not cease to create a supply of hot water or cut off the water supply, until the water is turned off at the point of use.

When you get in the shower, you will have hot water until you turn it off. If you are also running the dish washer, it will create enough hot water to supply both of the appliances without cutting off the supply of hot water to either the shower or the dishwasher. Plumbing repair and drain cleaning will be much reduced since there is no tank to spring a leak, or drains to clean out in a tankless water heater.  Annual maintenance is encouraged to maintain optimal performance.

NAVIEN TANKLESS GAS WATER HEATERS

Navien NR210NG Tankless Water Heater

We removed a 50 gallon tank type gas water heater from this closet and installed the Navien NR210NG tankless gas water heater.  We opted for this unit due to location - in a closet on the first floor of the customers home.  This unit is a condensing unit which provides a 98% efficiency and a very cool exhaust allowing the use of PVC pipe for venting.  Now the customer has more storage room.  The steel pipe in the picture was already in place to provide fresh air for the tank type water heater.
